Who We Are

Contractors Guidebook is made by Esmeralda and Rolando Cornejo of Top Rank ROI LLC, a small company in California. We explain the paperwork side of starting a contracting business (licenses, business structure, taxes, payroll and insurance basics) using the official agency pages, and we tell you where your state’s rules live.

Why we made this site

A lot of good tradespeople put off going out on their own because the paperwork looks like a maze: a state license, a business registration, an EIN, workers’ comp, payroll taxes, permits, bonds. The rules are public, but they are spread across federal agencies, state boards and city offices, and most of the free help online comes from companies selling formation, software or insurance. We built Contractors Guidebook to put the steps in order and point to the agency that actually decides each one.

What we cover

  • Contractor licensing: how to find whether your state, county or city licenses your trade, with state examples labeled by state.
  • Business setup: sole proprietor, LLC and other structures, registering a business name, and getting a free EIN from the IRS.
  • Workers’ comp, license bonds and the insurance contractors commonly carry, explained as education only.
  • Your first employee: Form I-9, Form W-4, new-hire reporting, payroll taxes and state registrations.
  • Employee or independent contractor: how the IRS, the U.S. Department of Labor and states look at it.
  • Self-employment tax and estimated tax payments, in plain English.

What we don’t do

  • We don’t give tax, legal or insurance advice for your situation. We explain the rules and link the agency; a licensed professional can apply them to you.
  • We don’t sell insurance, quotes or loans, and we don’t take referral fees from insurance carriers, brokers or lenders.
  • We don’t promise that you’ll pass an exam, get licensed or save money.
  • When we mention our own company’s services, we label it plainly as our own.

Our mission

We only speak the truth. We only help within the category we cover. We always cite our sources, and we’re friendly and easy to do business with. Our objective is to help you find a better alternative, or to confirm that your present choice is already your best choice. We’re creative in how we explain things, but we never exaggerate: we say only what’s true, and nothing misleading or unverified.

How we use AI here

We use AI tools to help research, outline and draft. A person checks every fact against its source before anything is published, and each guide lists its sources with the date we checked them. If we add illustrations or videos, they will be labeled: illustrations made with AI tools say “Illustrative image” where they could pass for a photo, and any synthetic narration speaks for the brand, not as a human expert.

Our other sites

The same team runs True Trade Guide (software, websites and business email for trade businesses) and AI Talk for Biz (marketing and AI tools for local service businesses). When a topic belongs there, we link to it instead of repeating it here.

Education only: general information, not tax, legal, insurance or other professional advice for your situation. Rules, fees and deadlines change and vary by state, county and city, so check the official agency we link or ask a licensed professional before you act. We may earn money from ads and, in the future, paid links; our advice isn’t for sale.
